Working with an inspiring team of young makers, An Evening of Today was hosted by the Nieuw Ensemble in collaboration with ensemble Looptail. Among pieces by six other composers, I put together a core artistic team and presented I/O; a music-theatre production that brought together jazz and contemporary music performers, sound designers, theatre makers and the audience itself, offering a 30′ experience in the main hall of Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ.
The 2013 edition of An Evening of Today was the first one to take place, after which the concept by Joël Bons became a recurring event in the Muziekgebouw. The work I/O was the founding ground for Foundation (Stichting) I/O, which was lunched in 2014, and has been the company I lead up to today. The performance used the hall in unconventional ways, removing all seats, starting with an empty, flat hall, introducing performative musical scenes, altering at moments the hall’s dimensions, and involving the audience’s presence as a core dramaturgical element of the work.
