Alongside his artistic practice, Thanasis Deligiannis develops workshops, talks and lectures for festivals, universities, conservatoires and cultural institutions across Europe. Rooted in his artistic practice, these activities explore transdisciplinary approaches to composition, artistic research and collaborative creation. Rather than following fixed formats, they are developed in dialogue with the context, participants and objectives of each invitation, allowing them to expand, adapt or condense according to different educational and artistic settings.
At the core of Deligiannis’ practice lies an expanded understanding of composition. Extending beyond sound, it encompasses the organisation of materials, bodies, media, technologies and environments. His work moves transdisciplinarily across different fields, bringing compositional thinking into dialogue with methodologies drawn from theatre, dance, the visual arts, ethnography and anthropology. These disciplines do not remain separate domains: they gradually merge into a hybrid artistic practice that generates new formats, modes of collaboration and audience experiences.

Composing Time and Space: Transdisciplinary Approaches
Time of Music Festival, Viitasaari, Finland

Invited by the Time of Music Festival, Thanasis Deligiannis conceived and led the six-day international course Composing Time and Space: Transdisciplinary Approaches, sharing his artistic approach to composing across sound, performance, space and installation. The course brought together emerging composers and artists from Finland, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Spain and the United States, representing a wide range of artistic backgrounds and levels of study.
Through listening exercises, seminars and laboratory workshops, participants explored how composition can unfold across time and space, extending beyond the musical score to include movement, performance, installation and audience experience. Working individually and in groups, they developed projects employing a wide range of artistic media and technologies—including live performance, sound design, video, generative tools, 3D scanning, visual installation, folk instruments and interactive elements. These were brought together in Liturgies of Broken Systems, a performance-installation unfolding across six interconnected stations throughout the town’s high school building. Visitors were invited to move freely through the space, shaping their own trajectory as the different works coexisted and gradually influenced one another within a shared environment.
Corps à Corps
Greek Composers’ Union, Athens, Greece
25-29 May 2026, international workshop
Invited as one of the workshop tutors, Thanasis Deligiannis joined composers Michalis Paraskakis and Eleni Ralli in mentoring the participants of the five-day international workshop Corps à Corps, organised by the Greek Composers’ Union in the presence of Georges Aperghis. Bringing together selected composers from Canada, China, the United States, the Netherlands, Greece, Latvia, Italy and France, the workshop was dedicated to the creation of new score-based performative works for duos, written for combinations of flute, violin, trombone and double bass.
Working closely with each composer throughout the week, Deligiannis mentored the artistic development of the new works alongside the other tutors and Georges Aperghis, through rehearsals, individual tutoring sessions and collective feedback discussions. The workshop culminated in a public concert of the newly created pieces, followed by a final day dedicated to Aperghis’ artistic practice, including open rehearsals, discussions on his compositional methods, a concert of his works and a ceremony appointing him Honorary President of the Greek Composers’ Union.
Transdisciplinary Approaches Intensive
Royal Conservatoire The Hague, The Netherlands
10–14 March 2025, interfaculty workshop
Invited by the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, Thanasis Deligiannis conceived and led a five-day edition of Transdisciplinary Approaches as part of the Conservatoire’s Interfaculty programme. Developed as a condensed introduction to an evolving educational framework that he continues to develop through his teaching at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, the workshop brought together students from ArtScience, Composition, Jazz Composition and Sonology.
Each day combined seminars with intensive studio sessions. The seminars introduced participants to key concepts and terminology, influential artistic practices, and discussions around their own observations, artistic interests and research questions. These ideas were continuously tested through physical warm-ups, listening exercises, spatial tasks, guided improvisation and collective experimentation. Working with fundamental compositional elements such as time, space, light, amplification, performative bodies, and a chair as a deliberately trivial material, participants gradually developed practical insight into the function of each compositional tool. Rather than working towards individual pieces or a final performance, the workshop focused on designing a shared creative process. Over the course of five days, the group gradually evolved into a collaborative ensemble of performative creators, exploring how artistic decisions, group dynamics and compositional thinking can develop together through practice.
Margaroni Residency Workshop
Onassis AiR, Athens, Greece
23–24 October 2023, interdisciplinary workshop
Developed within the framework of the Margaroni Residency, a custom-made fellowship of Onassis AiR, Thanasis Deligiannis and Yannis Michalopoulos conceived and led a two-day interdisciplinary workshop sharing the artistic research, working methods and questions that had emerged during the residency. Addressed to artists and researchers from different disciplines, the workshop offered participants an opportunity to engage with an evolving artistic process before it had taken its final form.
Structured around four thematic modules—The Panighíri, Sound as a Guide, Working Interdisciplinary, and Other Places: Xirómero / Thessaly—the workshop explored the relationship between rural culture, landscape, sound and artistic composition. Through discussions and by revisiting the residency’s audiovisual documentation and field interviews, participants explored the creative assembly of sounds, images, objects, places and experiences within an open interdisciplinary process, allowing artistic forms ti emerge without being predetermined.

Music Theatre – From Artistic Research to Artistic Practice

Invited by the Music Theatre programme at ArtEZ University of the Arts, Thanasis Deligiannis gave a lecture on how artistic research can become an integral part of developing new work. Addressed to students working across music, performance and theatre, the session explored how research informs the creative process, rather than serving as content to be represented. Through examples from recent projects, Deligiannis reflected on the decisions, uncertainties and adaptations that shape the different stages of a project’s development. He reflected on how each project demands its own methodology, defined by the questions it raises, the collaborators involved and the context in which it unfolds. The lecture did not propose a fixed methodology; instead, it encouraged an open and interdisciplinary way of working in response to the needs of each project.
Archaeological Dialogues

As invited speakers in the session “Archaeology, Anthropology and the Arts,” Thanasis Deligiannis and Yannis Michalopoulos presented The Agrarian and the Panighíri at Archaeological Dialogues 2026, an interdisciplinary conference exploring the intersections between archaeology, anthropology and contemporary artistic practice. The session was moderated by archaeologist and theatre director Efthimis Theou.
Using examples from their collaborative practice, Deligiannis and Michalopoulos reflected on a hybrid methodology that moves freely between artistic, ethnographic and anthropological ways of working. They discussed how tools from these different disciplines can be combined to observe, document and explore a subject, allowing the research process itself to shape the development of new artistic work. Their contribution also introduced questions around the relationship between local cultural practices and central cultural institutions, prompting a broader discussion on how long-term engagement with particular places and communities can reveal perspectives and experiences that often remain outside institutional narratives.
International Workshop in Theory and Sound III

As an invited speaker at the International Workshop in Theory and Sound III, Thanasis Deligiannis presented From the Margaroni Residency (Thessaly, Xirómero, Athens) to Xirómero/Dryland (Venice Art Biennale 2024). The presentation traced the artistic trajectory of the collaborative research project co-initiated and co-directed with Yannis Michalopoulos, which culminated in the immersive installation Xirómero/Dryland, presented at the Greek Pavilion during the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Organised jointly by several departments of the University of Thessaly, the workshop brought together artists, researchers and scholars working across sound studies, anthropology, architecture and artistic research to explore the theme Flood, the Ec(h)opolitical. Curated by Dafni Tragaki, the programme featured a keynote lecture by artist and theorist Brandon LaBelle.
The presentation explored the development of the Margaroni Residency into Xirómero/Dryland, reflecting on the interdisciplinary processes through which artistic research evolved into an immersive installation. Combining ethnographic tools with compositional methods, Deligiannis discussed the creative assembly of documentary material, artistic ideas, collaborators, performers and spatial experiments into a unified experience unfolding across space and time. Within the context of Flood, the Ec(h)opolitical, the presentation reflected on the rural landscape not as a backdrop but as a dynamic network of cultural, social and environmental relations, shaping both the research process and the resulting artistic work.
Shifting Boundaries – Disembordering the Musical Field

As an invited speaker in the panel Disembordering the Musical Field, Thanasis Deligiannis contributed to a discussion on the changing nature of contemporary music creation. Moderated by Michiel Schuijer and Paul Craenen, the panel formed part of Shifting Boundaries, a long-term research initiative by November Music, Buma Cultuur and Dutch universities and conservatoires exploring emerging artistic practices in contemporary music.
Through the presentation of his artistic practice, Deligiannis reflected on an expanded understanding of composition, discussing how artistic ideas emerge through the interaction of people, media, technologies and disciplines, and how composition increasingly extends beyond sound to encompass space, movement and artistic direction. The discussion developed into the publication Shifting Boundaries: Situating Contemporary Music Practices, expanding these questions towards new models of music production, artistic collaboration and the infrastructures required to support emerging hybrid artistic practices.
