The RE-FUSE music theatre research platform is an initiative of the Greek National Opera in collaboration with Gaudeamus, that took place throughout 2016 and 2017. On a concept by Giorgos Koumentakis, the GNO artistic director, I was invited as the platform’s artistic coordinator to bring together a team that would conduct artistic research on music theatre, setting its own goals and ways to achieve them.
The RE-FUSE team consisted of Tzeni Argyriou (GR) – choreographer, Argyro Chioti (GR) – stage director, Thanasis Deligiannis (GR/NL) – composer, George Dumitriu (RO/NL) – violinist & violist, Pepe Garcia (MX/NL) – percussionist, Richard Haynes (AU/CH) – clarinetist, Kieran Klaassen (NL/US) – network programmer, Els Mondelaers (BE/NL) – singer, Roelof Pothuis (NL) – set designer & lighting designer, Efthimis Theou (GR/DE) – actor, Bas Wiegers (NL) – conductor.
The team worked through a series of online roundtables and physical workshops in Utrecht and Athens, the documentation of which is available online on the platform’s website: www.music-theatre.com.
